1. Simple Scene Setup
Open 3ds Max.
I'll show you the dynamics behind the wind chimes simulation by a simple scene setup. Once you get the idea, you can apply this technique to the complex wind chimes structure.
Go to Standard Primitives > Cylinder and draw a cylindrical shape
in the perspective viewport.
Draw another cylinder in the perspective view, relatively smaller than the
previous cylinder in length and radius. Keep that in the position as shown in
the following image.
With the vertical cylinder selected, jump into Compound Objects mode.
With the vertical cylinder selected, click on Boolean.
With Subtraction (A-B) radio button turned on and Pick Operand B selected, click on the small cylinder in the viewport.
It creates a hole in the cylinder.
Draw a tube in the viewport and keep it in the position so it must go
through the cylinder’s hole.
Draw a sphere in the viewport and put it on the top of the tube. It will
act as the holder.
Select all objects and drag them a bit up in the air from the ground. The
basic scene setup is ready. Now it’s time to apply dynamics.
2. Applying Dynamics
Open Mass FX toolbar.
With the cylinder and the tube selected, click on Set Selected as Dynamic Rigid Body option.
With the sphere selected, click on Set Selected as Static Rigid Body
With the cylinder selected, click on Create Universal Constraint.
Select Cylinder as Parent and Tube as Child.
Turn on Locked radio buttons of Swing X, Swing Y and Swing
With the tube selected, click on Create Universal Constraint.
This time, select Tube as Parent and none as Child.
Turn on Free radio buttons of Swing X, Swing Y and Swing
Make three copies of the main structure and keep them together side by side.
Go to Space Warps > Wind and draw a wind icon in the perspective
viewport facing towards the wind chimes.
Select a cylinder, Go to Forces tab and add the Wind force.
Repeat the process for the rest cylinders also.
Increase the values of Strength, Frequency, Turbulence and Scale of the wind.
Play the simulation and you will see the random simulation of wind chimes. Apply the same technique to any complex wind chimes structure.
Mass FX is a great dynamics tool in 3ds Max. It has replaced Reactor and has more controls over the dynamic simulation than ever.
