4 Points Planar Tracking in Blender

1. Tracking the Footage

Step 1

Open Blender.

Click on Editor and select Movie Clip Editor.

Step 3

It opens the Movie Clip Editor. Click on Open to import the footage in the movie clip editor.

Step 4

Go to the folder with the image sequence of the footage. Select the first frame and click the Open Clip button.

Now you can see the footage inside the movie clip editor window. 

Click on Prefetch Frames button to load the image sequence in the RAM. Alternatively, you can press the P key.

Step 6

Press and hold the Ctrl key and secondary-click the mouse button onto the marker. A tracker appears on the footage.

Following the same way, create trackers for the rest markers also.

Click on Track Forward button to track the footage.

Within a couple of seconds, the footage gets tracked. You can play the footage to check the reliability of the track. In my case, the footage has been tracked without any problem.

2. Creating Plane Track

Step 1

Click on Solve tab.

Step 2

Press the A key twice to select all trackers in the viewport. Go to Plane Track and click on Create Plane Track.

Step 3

It creates a plane track inside the viewport.

Move the control points of the plane track at the corners of the monitor.

3. Compositing in Node Editor

Step 1

Click on Editor and select Node Editor.

Turn on Use Nodes and Backdrop options.

Press Shift-A key and go to Input > Movie Clip.

With Ctrl and Shift key pressed, click on the Movie Clip node. It automatically gets connected to the Viewer node.

Click on Browse Movie button and select the image sequence.

Press Shift-A key again and go to Input > Movie Clip to create a new Movie Clip node.

Step 7

I want a movie clip to play on the monitor screen. So, I have chosen a movie file. If you want to place just an image, create an Image node instead of the Movie Clip node and then choose a still image of your choice.

To place the movie file on the top of the monitor, press Shift-A key again and go to Color > Alpha Over.

Connect the Alpha Over node with the monitor movie clip node.

Step 10

Connect the second movie clip node’s image output to the Alpha Over node’s image input.

Press Shift-A key again and go to Distort > Plane Track Deform.

Connect the Plane Track Deform node to the second Movie Clip node.

Step 13

Click on Open and select the monitor sequence file. Click on Camera and select the camera. At last, click on Plane Track and select the plane track.

As soon as you select the plane track, you will see the movie file gets fit in the monitor. 

Press the Play button and you will see the foreground movie going perfectly with the background footage.
