# High Poly Weapon Creation: Modeling the AK-47 in 3D Studio Max, Part 2

In this detailed, two part tutorial we are going to take a look at creating a high poly, realistic AK-47 in 3D Studio Max. We are going to use various polymodeling techniques and tools to create this very cool and detailed model.

Create a few more Spheres and put them into the holes where the main body connects with the handle.

Create a new Plane and Convert it to Editable Poly. Add two vertical loops and one horizontally which we need to move to the bottom of the plane. Finally Rotate the element 4 degrees on the Y-axis.

Select the 4 side edges and drag them forward on the Y-axis using Shift+Drag, after that select the top 2 vertices and move them backwards a bit.

Now drag the selected two edges on the X-axis as shown using Shift+Drag.

Move the vertices backwards a bit and then select the two edges again, and drag them backwards again.

Now drag the edges backwards two more times on the Y-axis and finally move the vertices on the back side, so they create the same shape as on the front side.

Now continue creating the shape using Shift+Drag. The result should look like so.

Add an edge loop in the middle of the front side of the element, and then Delete the selected polygons.

Apply a Symmetry modifier and check on Z for the Mirror Axis, then click the Flip option if needed. Finally Convert the object to Editable Poly.

Remove the loops we created in the center of the element and select the hole on the botton. Using Shift+Drag, Extrude the edges downward on the Z-axis and Scale them on the Y-axis as shown.

Using Shift+Drag again, drag the selected edges two more times and move them sideways in order to get a diagonal shape.

Shift+Drag two more times. The first time, select the vertices on the front side and move them back a bit. And for the second, move the back vertices forward and the middle ones downward a bit.

Select the bottom hole using Border and apply a Cap. Then connect the vertices across the bottom using Connect.

Add two more loops as shown.

Add one more loop around the handle and then apply a Turbosmooth modifier - Iterations: 2.

Create a new Line with this shape (Create > Shapes > Line.)

In the Rendering menu for the line, check the Enable In Viewport checkbox and change it from Radial to Rectangular, then adjust the width settings so it fits the handle gap.

Convert the shape to Editable Poly and Delete the polygons on the ends of it. Then apply a Chamfer on the four outer edges.

Apply a Turbosmooth modifier - Iterations: 1 and place the trigger guard as shown.

Create a new Cylinder with 18 Sides and Convert it to Editable Poly. Then select the bottom 8 polygons and Delete them.

Delete the front and back polygons, and Shift+Drag the bottom edges. Do that twice for the front edge and once for the back.

Shift+Drag three more times until you get a shape like this.

Connect the bottom edges with Bridge and apply a Cap to the side holes. Finally connect the side vertices using Connect.

On the front and back four polygons, apply an Inset with a low Amount and then add an edge loop close to the bottom edge.

Add two more loops on the two sides and then apply a Turbosmooth modifier - Iterations: 2.

Create a new Cylinder with 18 Sides, Convert it to Editable Poly and Delete the back polygon. Apply an Inset on the front polygon and then Chamfer the outer edge.

Create a new Box, Convert it to Editable Poly and add two edge loops as shown.

Select the loop we got after the first inset and from the Loops menu, click Loop Tools and then click Circle and Relax a couple of times.

Delete the polygon in the middle and apply a Bridge to the holes.

To crete the ammo magazine, create a new Line. Set it to Render In Viewport and Convert it to Editable Poly.

Move the vertices a bit in order to get a better shape.

Because the polygons intersect each other after the extrusion, we need to select the three overlapping vertices on each corner and apply a Weld.

Once done, add additional loops close to each edge as shown below.

Apply an Extrude on the second polygon from the bottom, and again add loops close to each edge.

Add three more loops to the front side of the element and position them like so.

On the bottom, we need to select the polygons (highlighted below) and apply an Extrude twice with a low Height. And then apply an Inset.

Now move nine rows below the polygons we just extruded (in the previous step) and select the nine polygons shown below. Scale these polygons on the X-Axis in order to create a square shape.

Apply an Extrude twice with a Negative Height. The first needs to be with a low value in order to create a loop close to the main edge, and the second with a higher Height. Finally Delete the polygons.

Add a loop in the center of the element and Delete the part which has no details on it. Apply a Symmetry modifier on the Z-Axis and Convert the element into Editable Poly.

Remove the loop in the center of the magazine and move seven rows (of polygons) below the hole we just created and select the polygons shown. Finally apply an Inset twice.

Using the Loop Tools menu like we did earlier, create a circle and then Scale it on the X-Axis in order to create an ellipse shape.

Apply Cap to the hole and then apply an Extrude and an Inset twice. The first inset needs to be with a low amount to create a loop close to the edge.

Next, create a new Cylinder with 18 Sides and Delete the top and bottom polygons. Then select the polygons shown and Extrude them.

Delete the extra polygons that were created by the extrusion and apply a Chamfer on all of the edges.

Finally apply Turbosmooth - Iterations: 1. then Rotate the element 40 degrees and place it as shown.

Create a Box and Convert it into Editable Poly. Move the selected vertices on the Y-Axis and then Scale it on the X-Axis. After that apply an Extrude on the top polygon and again Scale the vertices on the X-Axis, and then move them on the Y-Axis.

Apply an Extrude three times on the bottom polygon. After the first extrude, we need to Scale the polygons on the X_Axis.

On the polygons in the middle, we apply an Inset and then Extrude twice. Use a low Height on the first extrude to create a supporting edge, and finally Delete the polygons.

Delete the polygons on the bottom and front side, and then add six loops as shown.

Once the element is detached, add more loops as shown.

Now on the selected polygons, apply an Extrude three times.

Create a shape like this and move the selected vertices back on the Y_Axis.

After we move the vertices backwards, select only the middle vertices and move them forward. Then add loops close to the edges as shown.

Now go back to the previous element and select the edges around the hole that was created when we detached the polygons (step 211.) With the edges selected Shift+Drag them twice on the X-Axis. (drag just a bit the first time in order to create an edge close to the main edge.)

Place the two elements and apply a Turbosmooth - Iterations: 2.

At the front part of the body where we deleted the polygons, we have a hole. Select the top edges.

Switch to Isolation Mode with Alt+Q and like before, use the Snaps Toggle (shortcut is "S") and drag the edges downwards twice downwards on the Z-Axis.

Apply a Weld on the vertices which touch each other.

Add a loop as shown and quit Isolation Mode.

Create a Cylinder with 18 Sides and Convert it into Editable Poly, then Delete the front and back polygons as well as the four side polygons, as shown.
