Tuts+ Hollywood Movie Title Series: Fast and the Furious 6
We are going to look at the title animation style of the movie Fast & Furious 6. We will make this title using Cinema 4D for the modeling and animation of the logo. Then we'll see how to use the lights system and materials to save us a lot of time on After Effects for the final styling and compositing. We'll also be using the new CINEWARE module where you can extract any alpha channel you want.

Hi, and welcome back, I'm Antonio Cerri from crrntn dot com. Today on "Hollywood Movie Title V5” series. We're going to be looking the animation style "Fast & Furious 6". We will make this incredible speedy title style, using Cinema 4d for the modeling and animation of the logo and After Effects with Cineware for the final composite. The most focus part of this tutorial is the style of the colors of the logo, which is very different from that which is normally used for the movie title, because the end result of materials, lights of the 3d logo, is a middle mix between the broadcasting and the cinematic impact. Obtain this logo is very simple. As we can see, I have already subdivided and distributed all the letters on separate layers. This will make immediate the work animation. To achieve this, you can use the 2d drawing tools or directly a linear font with "italic" style. In particular, this is a famous commercial font. Where the only two modified letters are the two "F" letters. Another detail not to be forgotten, is the proper proportion of all letters of the logo and the big number "6". For the main text "fast & furious" I applied 3 materials. The first, as in the 6 number for the bodies of the letters. A simple flat black material with the selection "C1", for the start caps. The values of reflection and specular are very low, as you can see. Finally, we have the same chrome material for the bevel. It is very important remember to insert a sky map, for to make work well the chrome parts. The image of the map, it must be simple and with a clear open sky without clouds. Incredible! I love this style, exaggerated and cool!! As I said before, this result is only thanks to this incredible lights system composed by 7 different lights. In fact, if you turn-off this system. This is real impact with the materials. However, all chrome reflections, work well with the sky map. Ok let's go back to our lights system. I show you in detail how they were positioned around the logo. The spot light behind, illuminates well from behind to the final part of the logo. While this color spotlight is located at the bottom and illuminates the front bevel. To have this flat cone, is necessary set in the "details" panel the value of aspect ratio to zero point 14. This large omni light gives color on the top part of the number.
The others lights have more or less the same purpose, but make all together, a diffuse illumination on the entire depth of the body of the logo. Finally, this particular omni light with its setting, creates a light point in the upper part of the number 6. Very cool! Do not worry, this is the complete scheme. We proceed with the last step of cinema 4d. The animation of the letters of the logo. It may seem strange to say, but the animation is the simplest part of the project. Just create a random motion and which falls within in the first 10 frames. The rest, you already know. I show you what is the correct procedure to animate the logo with the "Fast" style. First of all, we convert our "Hierarchical Extrusion" group, as polygonal objects. In this way, we already have all the letters directly ready to be animated. The tag pong, can be removed, not serves. For animation sample, I choose the "A" letter. Sets the rotation and the final position of the letter, in the frame 10. After, in the frame 6, edit the arrival values of rotation, and in the frame 3 of those of starting position. In this way, we get a movement. This simple procedure takes only a few minutes, but at the end the result of your logo will be 100 percent custom. I forgot, during the sequence of letters, is necessary to set a variation of depth of the extrusion. Starts with the value 10 in frame 1, and closes in frame 10, with the final value of 60. This gives a greater feeling of speed. Is important activate the tag motion blur for all letters layers, and in the render setting panel, the vector motion blur with these parameters. The correct procedure for working in After Effects with all the alpha channels, is to set in the render panel: on multi-pass. 3 "buffer object". Assign the check ID to 3 groups, with the values 1, 2 and 3. With the tag compositing activate the value for the text, for the symbol number, and finally for the front cap. This project can be processed with both the Cineware module, or with the pre-render videos. In any case, in addition to the full logo in order to have all reflections. We have need the alpha channel of the text, the body number and the front cap. Ok, Open After Effects. This project represents the pure virtuosity of the lensflares. It is not necessary to repeat these same styles, you can also try other preset that work well.
The background gradient is obtained with the circle filter, with a radius of four hundred. The feather value must have a high value, for have a very soft borders. This is the color that I have used, with opacity to eighty percent. The first lensflare is composed of two colors streak lines. As you can see I had to split the layer in order to create the effect of initial movement above the logo with an intense white light, which becomes in two colored streaks over the background gradient. The colors are: orange pale and light blue. On the cap layer and the text, I added a dropshadow layer-style. These are the values. for following the sequence animation, I insert an interpolation of opacity. Between frame 7 and 10. As the original video this makes very legible the logo. The same technique is repeated for the symbol number 6. I Forgot, on all three parts of the masked logo, I applied an exposure effect of zero point 5 zero point 8. This in order to improve the impact of color. While on the front cap, I added a little desaturation in order to make more visible lensflares masked above it. The first is composed of two blue lines. They have a small vertical movement, meanwhile from right to left.
You can also use the add mode, but I prefer the result: lighten. The masked effect creates the illusion of a external reflection. The same step is applied to the pink streak-line. The only difference is that it moves in the opposite direction. Even in this case I prefer the lighten mode. On the body of the number, I set a high value to exposure in order to make it more brilliant. To improve the fast motion of arrival of the letters in the first few frames. I added an adjustment layer with directional blur filter. the value must decrease from frame 4. So that in the frame 10 arrives to the value of 1, if we let this over on the whole sequence, make softer the impact of the logo. The most incredible part of the use of lensflares in this title, are the initial multi flash lights. As you can see the movement is a horizontal rebound very fast. It is very important that the intensity of the light, must be to 0 in the frame 11. You can use as a reference the random aerial movements of the letters of the logo. This lenflares is a very easy to create on the optical flares. That said, I must say that animation is very cool! and works fine. As I've said before. On this project you can work with just the file on cinema 4d, thanks to the cineware module.
The mode is the same as the treatment of the pre-rendered videos. Ok, I show you better how to extract the alpha channels. To be active all the buttons must be in standard final mode. Activate the check "defined multi-passes" and click add. Cineware in automatic adds all ID buffer objects layers of the alpha channels. The text. The body of the number 6. Finally, the front cap. For activate the masks, just apply the track-matte in "Luma". Duplicate for other 2 more times. The base is complete. Ok, add the audio file and proceed with the final rendering.
